Junior Cycle.
Junior Cycle lies within the compulsory period of education and is usually taken by students between the ages of 12 and 15. It is a three year cycle and students take the Junior Cert State Examination at the end of the third year.
Review of the Junior Cert Programme.
The NCCA undertakes a review of the Junior Cycle on a continuous basis. Currently the emphasis of the review is on curriculum overload and changes to the Junior Cycle are due to come into effect from September 2014.
Core Subjects at Junior Cycle.
Students study all of the following subjects during the first three years: Irish, English, Maths, History, Geography, CSPE, SPHE, Religion, French, Science, Business and PE.
Optional Subjects
Junior Cycle students have the choice of two of the following subjects: Art, Home Economics, Metalwork, Music, Technical Graphics and Wood Technology.
In First Year students are assigned to classes alphetically and all classes are of mixed ability. In Second/Third Year class groupings are banded for Irish, English and Maths according to ability.
Before enrolment every incoming first year student is given an opportunity to see what the school has to offer during the course of an open day usually held in November. They are informed in particular about the optional subjects that are on offer in the school at that visit. All first years are expected to take the core subjects and two from the optional choices on offer.
